Since time immemorial humans have found companionship in dogs, cats, horses, birds and small mammals. It’s only fitting that there’s an official holiday to celebrate these wonderful animals – National Pet Day!

This Thursday, April 11th join the Dune team as they share their furry friends!

Did you know?

National Pet Day was first established to celebrate the health benefits that pets provide to their owners as well as to promote awareness for pets seeking their forever home. The holiday was officially established in 2006 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige.

In the U.S. alone there is an average of 78 million dogs, 85 million cats, 14 million birds, 12 million small mammals and 9 million reptiles as recorded pets, according to the Smithsonian Magazine.

Pets of Dune

For us here at Dune, this holiday is one we are eager to celebrate! We asked our team members to share their pets (yes – we have pictures!) as well as a gorgeous personalized Dune Jewelry piece that is emblematic of their pawsome friends. Here’s what they said:

Holly, Founder & CEO of Dune Jewelry

Name: Earle, named after Sylvia Earle, American oceanographer and explorer

Fun Fact: Big fan of butt scratches and his toy raccoon.

Design: Would love to design a dog bone piece for Earle!

Holly, founder and CEO of Dune Jewelry, and her dog for National Pet Day.

Dustin, Operations Director

Name(s): Peaches & Pinecone

Fun Fact: They were found under a dumpster behind a car wash in Brockton, Massachusetts.

Design: The Sterling Travel Tag, because I have one made with foundation stone from the home we were living in when we adopted them.

Two white and orange cats, Peaches & Pinecone, looking into camera and out window.

Daisy, Controller

Name(s): Canelo & Oreo

Fun Fact: They are siblings and both their birthdays are on January 1st.

Design: They each have their very own Paw Print Collar Charm filled with opals.

Kate, Director of Sales

Name(s): Messi (named by my son, after the soccer player).

Fun Fact: Messi is an almost 10 year old Labradoodle and his absolute favorite foods are fresh croissants and cheese (it’s the poodle in him)!

Design: Again, based on his French heritage (part poodle), I have to say the design that reminds me of Messi is the Cushion Cut Nautical Necklace made with beautiful chunky sand from Nice, France.

Name(s): Octavia

Fun Fact: She’s an international traveler! She’s been to Peru and Costa Rica (twice) in less than a year.

Design: Inspired by the brilliant shores where she was born (Costa Rica), the Natural Sand Dollar Bracelet is the design I chose. Much like the sand dollar, her name is inspired by a symbol of luck (my lucky number 8)! Plus, I can add any of the 20+ Costa Rican sands available in Dune’s Sandbank to the design.

Francesca, blonde, holding a black, brown, and gray dachshund puppy.

Jessica, Customer Service

Name(s): Zelda & Nik Fury

Fun Fact: Zelda thinks she is a huge dog. She requires that stall doors be opened for her even though she could walk right under them. Her favorite toy is a spiderman squeeker. Fury is my always happy boy who loves playing ball, snuggling, and dancing.

Design: Best friends Turtle Necklace with ruby for my princess Zelda and blue sand stone for my always sparkling Fury.

Two dogs on couch sleeping, Zelda & Nik Fury.

Sarah, Studio Manager

Name(s): Koolie

Fun Fact: (I’m obsessed with her so I can’t have just 1 lol)…She can jump almost as high as my entire height straight up into the air. She has all the attitude of a husky, yet also has a teddy bear she loves to snuggle with and can’t live without.

Design: The Delicate Dune Sunburst Bracelet filled with sunflowers because she is my sunshine.

Dog named Koolie is on the floor in her little dog shoes and smiling at the camera.

Ally G, Pop Up Boutique Manager, Events Coordinator and Wholesale Rep

Name(s): Sir Walter and Lord Stanley

Fun Fact: Their names, clearly.

Design: The Paw Print Charm that I put on their collars – they needed a piece of Dune, too!

Ally's two white pugs Sir Walter and Lord Stanley.

Maggie, Social Media Manager

Name(s): Poseidon & Kratos

Fun Fact: Anytime Alexa speaks they break out into a full-on Howl competition.

Design: The Paw Print Charm! They each have their own engraved with their name and our phone numbers. Plus, each charm has sand from The Knob at Cape Cod, which is the beach I always take them to AKA their favorite place to dig holes!

Lauren, Brand Manager

Name(s): Mr. Weedy

Fun Fact: Technically he’s a stray cat that comes and visits me in Brooklyn. My partner isn’t ready to admit he wants a cat, so in the meantime, I’m taking care of strays!

Design: The Black Onyx Rolo Necklace by our sister brand, Mi Tesoro. The Onyx is so mysterious like Mr. Weedy. I never know when he’s going to show up, but it’s always an omen for a good day when he does!

Mr. Weedy a stray cat who comes to visit

Carole Imperiale, Publicist

Name(s): Stella aka “Nosey Rosey”

Fun Fact: Last year, we welcomed Stella, our adorable 5-year old French Bulldog, into our family. Stella loves being cradled like a baby and enjoys playing with various toys, but her absolute favorite is her piggy!

We affectionately call Stella “Nosey Rosey” due to her curious nature. She insists on knowing every detail of what you’re doing throughout the day.

Design: Inspired by Stella’s nickname, I am planning on getting something special made with rose petals. I am thinking about either the Boho Ring or the Cushion Cut Nautical Necklace with Stella’s name engraved on it.

Katherine, Creative Director & Graphic Designer

Name(s): Peppermint, Via & Koshka

Fun Fact: Peppermint is our new rescue kitty from the Feral Cat Foundation where my son volunteers to hold cats and kittens at the adoption events. Via stands for V.I.A. Railway Canada (we have a train fan here), and Koshka means female cat in Russian.

Designs: Peppermint loves my Cosmos Necklace – I think she wants one for herself. Koshka has beautiful green eyes which remind me of green sea glass – would love to make a cat eye in our Travel Treasures Customizable Round Charm with sea glass and shells. Via has beautiful stripes so any design with the tiger eye is the perfect one for her.

Katherine's three cats Peppermint, Via & Koshka and the Cosmos Necklace.

Jenny, AR/AP Clerk

Name(s): Ace

Fun Fact: He is the sweetest boy who also happens to be a sock-stealing ninja and he loves finding sticks to carry in his mouth on walks.

Design: Probably the Customizable Sun Ray Tag Charm because Ace has been such a light in my life since I brought him home in November. I will be getting Ace a Paw Print Charm with sand from Hilton Head – one of his favorite places to play with his doggy friends – to add to his collar.

Join us in celebrating this National Pet Day by purchasing a piece of Dune and supporting our charitable partner P.A.W.S. Project Foundation

P.A.W.S. (Precious Animals, Wonderful Shelters) was launched by Molly, who at 12 years old was inspired by her own rescue dogs and decided to create an initiative to help raise awareness and money for homeless dogs. Within a year, she raised $28,000, gathered $40,000 in supplies, and rescued 79 dogs. Now, through the P.A.W.S. Project Foundation, Molly continues her mission of rescuing animals and supporting shelters in the south.
