For Kelly Taylor, one of those memories began on the shores of Lake Huron with a birthday surprise, some leftover barbecue coals, and an afternoon her father would talk about for years.

A Bracelet for Two People She Loves

Kelly originally reached out to Dune hoping to create an in-memoriam design using her father’s and brother’s cremains. When she ultimately wasn’t able to obtain them, she worked with Jessica from our Customer Experience team to find another way to tell their story.

The answer was in the places and details that already meant so much.

Kelly chose Ruby for her father’s July birthstone, Pink Tourmaline for her brother’s October birthstone, and sand from Lake Huron, a place deeply connected to some of her happiest family memories.

Burgers on the Beach

Kelly’s parents retired to Northern Michigan around 2002, and she remembers it as “the happiest I have ever seen them.”

One year, her father’s July birthday happened to fall on a Saturday. Kelly and her siblings surprised him with a day at the beach. They hadn’t planned a barbecue, but someone nearby had been grilling and left behind hot coals.

So they improvised.

Burgers were made. The family stayed. And an unplanned afternoon became the kind of memory her father would still talk about years later.

He called it “Burgers on the Beach.”

“We all had so much fun and my dad still talked about that day years later.”

That’s why Lake Huron sand belonged in Kelly’s bracelet. It connects her not only to a shoreline her family loved, but to one very specific afternoon and all the joy held within it.

There’s another beautiful detail in Kelly’s story. After finding her father’s signature on a high school graduation photograph he had given her mother, she had his handwriting tattooed onto her wrist.

Now, her bracelet sits alongside it.
