In 2015 Captain Kate became the first female American Captain of a mega cruise ship. Knowing that women currently only represent 2% of the maritime industry, she quickly realized that her promotion meant that she had been given an incredible opportunity to help normalize women in this profession using her platform. It took Captain Kate 19 years to earn her title. Her hope for the future? That those who are coming up the ranks after her will be referred to as “captain” and not “female captain.”
